Leslie Claus Mohawk Nation Wolf Clan Leslie was born in 1909. In his youth he was skilled at whittling, creating birds, animals, totem poles, and fancy wooden canes. He resided on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory near Deseronto, Ontario, Canada where he served as a teacher and Native counsellor attached to the Hastings County Board of Education for many years. Leslie attended the Mary Schneider School of Fine Arts (Actinolite, Ontario), the Donnah Cameron School of Watercolor Artists (New Market Ontario), and painted with artists Karl Schaeffer, Mary Schneider, John Hall, Garnet Hazared and Muriel Andrews and drawing with Willi Killian at Loyalist College (Bellville, Ontario). Leslie's mediums of choice include watercolor, oil, oil pastel, dry pastel, pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, clay and wood. His expressions range from painting to ceramic sculpture to photography. His work was exhibited in shows at the Bellville Art Assocaiton from 1968 - 1979. His watercolor works often featured local scenes of Tyendinaga or Six Nations Reserve. Leslie passed on in 1991. His love of the arts and education inspired his family and friends to establish a Memorial Scholarship Fund in his name for a First Nations student from the Quinte Bay area. His work is in the permanent collection of the Iroquois Museum (Howes Cave, NY) *Bio text cannot be used in print or web publications without IM permission.
