Roger Parish Taioroniote Mohawk Nation Wolf Clan Roger is a printmaker, hand-made papermaker, painter, and jeweler. He transforms paper fibers such as gampi and kozo into simulated animal skins, and is perhaps best known for those which appear to contain an embedded tree. Immensely versatile, he is adept with the two-dimensional processes of clay monoprints, etching, monotypes, and watercolor. He also employs colored pulps as a painting medium in his exploration of both traditional and abstract forms of expression. Equally popular are his unique wearable glass creations which showcase the spectacular qualities of color and light. Many of these pieces feature delicately subtle images of dragonflies, trees, and other components of the natural world. Roger has a background in science and art, studied printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and holds a Ph.D in chemistry. These complementary foundations serve him well in the alchemy that defines his expression. Roger acquired lapidary and jewelry making skills in Philadelphia and Arizona, and is a certified instructor in precious metal clay by the PMC Guild. He enjoys working with natural materials, such as rare jaspers, opals, petrified wood, and dinosaur bone, shaping them into simple and distinctive forms that showcase the beauty of the stone. He is represented in the permanent collections of the Colgate University Museum (Hamilton, NY), the Mashantucket Pequot Museum (Ledyard, Connecticut), the Fenimore Art Museum (Cooperstown, NY) and the New York State Museum (Albany, NY). A collection of his works was featured in a traveling exhibit in Europe and Canada from 2003-2005. Roger is a contributor to the ART in Embassies Program with the U.S. State Department and a member of the Guild of Papermakers, based in Philadelphia. *Bio text cannot be used in print or web publications without IIM permission.
