Laurel Parker Oneida Nation Turtle Clan Laurel was born in 1947 in Phoenix, AZ. She did not reside on Oneida Nation territory until 1996, at which point she began to take a strong interest in the Haudenosaunee cultural traditions that she had not been exposed to growing up. She began pursuing art in 1992 and started with cross stitch, a craft that her sister Carla Reynolds was engaged in. In 1997, Laurel turned her focus to dolls and painting. She had previously constructed cloth dolls for her nieces so fabric was more familiar to her than the traditional cornhusk. Once introduced to the story of the no-face cornhusk doll, Laurel incorporated it into her cloth dolls. Laurel's dolls range from 16 to 20 inches in height and are finished with traditional calico and ribbon outfits. At times, she makes special treaty cloth dolls as an alternative to those produced from commercial fabric. Encouraged by her friend Birdy Lindner, Laurel also experimented with painting. Her work features natural and fanciful landscapes. Her work was marketed through the Shakowi Cultural Center (Oneida Nation), local craft festivals, the Iroquois Museum Labor Day Art Festivals, and the gift shop at Turning Stone Casino (Oneida Nation). Laurel demonstrated her art at the New York State Fair and the Shakowi Cultural Center. One of Laurel's crocheted dolls was awarded 2nd place at the New York State Fair (Syracuse, NY) and her cross stitch earned her several awards at the same venue. Laurel's work is in the collection of the Iroquois Museum (Howes Cave, NY). *Bio text cannot be used in print or web publications without IM permission.
